Scholarship Winners: Where Are They Now?

SR Education Group has now awarded $62,000 to 30 incredible scholarship applicants. At the time they applied, each applicant faced significant life challenges but they had a clear plan for their future and impressive life goals. We caught up with a few of our winners to see how their lives have changed since winning an SR Education Group scholarship.

Congratulations to Courtney

Courtney Dotson of Saint Peters, Missouri is one step close to fulfilling her life-long dream of becoming a special education teacher. Courtney is an incredibly hard-working 23-year-old student at Lindenwood University who is pursuing a degree in Elementary and Special Education.

The SR Education Group scholarship committee selected Courtney to win the Women’s Scholarship because they were confident in her ability and determination to make a difference throughout her career as a special education teacher. She displayed an excitement for the profession and a strong commitment to professional development. Her work ethic is exemplary.

Amanda Kloepfer Wins the July Military Scholarship

Amanda Kloepfer of Rockford, Illinois, has an incredible story of overcoming adversity. Just as she began her military career in 2007, she was severely injured in a car accident resulting in brain injury, a speech impediment and some hearing loss.

Amanda is now pursuing a forensic accounting master’s degree from Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) through an online program that will open up career opportunities for someone with her physical challenges.

Nicole Schmidt Wins the June Mom Scholarship

In June, SR Education Group awarded a $2,000 Mom Scholarship to Nicole Schmidt. Nicole is a 23-year-old single mother of two and has no outside sources of financial support. She lives in Carey, Ohio, and is earning her certificate in medical billing and coding from Marion Technical College. Nicole recognized that she needed additional education in order to accomplish her career goals. She enrolled in the medical billing and coding program at Marion Technical College in the hopes of earning a position at a physician’s office. Medical billing and coding grabbed Nicole’s interest after she looked through some of the coursework her mother was taking; it appealed to her strong sense of organization and offered her the opportunity to work in an industry where she felt she could make a positive impact.

The All New Single-Parent Scholarship

Single parents face immense barriers when trying to earn a college degree. Twenty-eight percent of single-parent families in the United States live in poverty; that means a yearly income of less than $15,130 for a two-person household. Beginning in July, SR Education Group will accept applications for a $2,000 Single-Parent Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded six times a year.

Lauren Johnson Wins the June Military Scholarship

In June SR Education Group awarded the $2,000 Military Scholarship to Lauren Johnson, a veteran of the conflict in Afghanistan. She is currently earning her MFA in creative writing from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Lauren, the daughter of a military nurse, enrolled in Air Force ROTC when she was 17 and began her active-duty service four years later as a public affairs officer. In her position she told the stories of her colleagues through journalism and community involvement. Later, she worked on the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan where she observed first hand the difficulties of war.
