We believe that quality higher education should be accessible to all. Period.
People are seeking higher education. It is a commonly held belief that a degree will help improve job prospects and quality of life. In today’s educational landscape, hundreds of for-profit and not-for-profit colleges have popped up in order to fulfill a very real demand. In 2010, there were 2.4 million students enrolled in online for-profit schools. These online schools (and companies like SR Education Group) exist because traditional colleges and universities just don’t have the capacity to accommodate the amount of people wanting to improve their education for their career prospects.
We know the need for these schools exists. They target a different market than traditional colleges and universities. Their online programs allow flexibility and convenience for older students with families and busy schedules. Students can now keep a full time job and still attend classes while attending an online or non-traditional school. Technology has grown as the need for education grew and educators are finding innovative and exciting ways to teach online. The quality of the education doesn’t necessarily have to suffer in this new format.
But, we acknowledge that sometimes, it does.
The National Center for Education Statistics says that 20 percent of students at for-profit colleges graduate in four years, whereas 52 percent graduate in four years at non-profit private schools. The difference is stark and concerning. For a variety of reasons, people are not completing their degrees. Many critics even question the value of earning a degree from one of these online schools. The government is working to regulate the industry. Still others are hoping to shut down these for-profit schools.
We believe that shutting the schools down won’t solve the problem. Instead, we should encourage and recognize schools that do provide quality curriculum. These schools exist because there are millions of people hoping an education can help change their lives. These people need schools that can cater to their varied needs.
SR Education Group wants to help students find a quality education in this non-traditional space. Each program and institution is vetted by SR Education Group and we only partner with those that are fully accredited by a national or regional accrediting agency that is approved by the U.S. Department of Education and Canadian Regulatory Agencies. But, we understand that accreditation is not enough. We have to dig deeper to understand which colleges provide value to their students. We use information such as repayment rates, graduation rates, retention rates, and our unbiased student reviews to help rank colleges. Further, SR Education Group makes this information readily available and easy to understand, so that any prospective student can feel confident and secure in their decision to enroll in one of these institutions.
SR Education Group will always recognize the schools that are excelling in this non-traditional industry. We will continue to provide transparent, valuable information about all of the schools in this market. We also want previous students to help future students make the right decision. By producing more informed prospective students armed with the knowledge to select only the schools that will best serve their career needs, we believe that the natural competition of the market will ultimately influence the institutions to improve the quality of their services. This class of better informed students will force schools to improve their programs, in turn attracting more students. In the end, both the students and the institutions will reap the benefits.
We believe a quality education should be accessible to anyone who wants it. We want to do everything we can in helping students find it.
