Winners for our first round of 2019 scholarships have been announced, and we are excited to share the inspiring goals, academic plans, and dedicated work of the selected individuals. There are four scholarship categories into which our winners fall:

  • Community College Scholarship: Kori-Ann Taylor of Northampton Community College, Alyssa Trim of East Arkansas Community College, Andrea Chavis of Fayetteville Technical Community College, Kimone Robinson of Prince George's Community College, and Melaina Goodman of Helena College University of Montana

  • Undergraduate Scholarship: Jarret Wonders of Kent State University, Kevwe Abamwa of University at Buffalo, Charles Barnett of Central Michigan University, and Shaunte Webb Austin of Stillman College

  • Graduate Scholarship: Shekesha Robinson of Wilmington University

  • Military Scholarship: Anna Darelli-Anderson of the University of Utah and Lester Paclibar of Cosumnes River College

The 12 recipients each receive a scholarship of $5,000. All of them impressed and moved the scholarship panel with a range of reasons behind their needs, and a wonderful variety of life goals. For example, one recipient hopes to work in the medical field to aid people with mental illnesses, another plans to become an arson investigator, and another hopes to be a high school coach or teacher who inspires students to go to college. These stories, along with the other winners’ professional goals, will be shared more in-depth in future blog posts. The scholarship money provided to the applicants will help them finish the degrees that will be the basis to fulfilling their high aspirations. Encapsulating the gratitude many applicants shared, Andrea Chavis said, “It feels so amazing – being a single working mom of two girls – not to have to worry about how I will find funds to help cover my nursing school expenses. I can never thank you guys enough for your generosity.”

The SR Education Group scholarship awards occur on a quarterly basis. The scholarship applications are carefully considered by our scholarship board, and winners are chosen based on their answers to two main questions: How do you plan to use your degree in the next five years? And are there any special familial or personal reasons contributing to your financial needs? The next scholarship deadline is June 30th. You can access and learn more about the application on our scholarships page.

We are grateful to all our applicants for putting time and thought into answering our questions. We are especially thankful for our scholarship winners, and we hope their determination will inspire many!
