We just released a major update to OnlineU.org: the 2017 Most Affordable Online Colleges! As a part of our ongoing commitment to promoting tuition transparency in higher education, we launched an updated ranking of the top 25 most affordable online colleges overall, complete with up-to-date degree and tuition information. New for this year, we also developed individual rankings by degree level, to provide lists of the most affordable online schools for associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

Reducing the Cost of a College Degree

How do you get college credit at 80% of the cost? You take a class through the newest player in the world of online education, Sophia.org.

Founded in 2009, this social learning platform was recently picked up by the online giant, Capella University, and was built to educate college students at a fraction of the cost.

Currently, five courses provided by Sophia.org can be transferred over to 2,000 different colleges and universities, and it will only cost you $110 per semester credit. This is $798 less than any private, four-year-institution and $160 less than any public (in-state), four-year-institution.

The rankings take a critical look at all of the online colleges who offer affordable tuition to determine which ones provide real outcomes-based results and the best overall value to their graduates. Last year, we launched OnlineU with a focus on the most affordable online colleges in the United States. This year, we wanted to factor in the quality of the institutions, as well as continuing to focus on the colleges and universities that are making an effort to keep tuition costs low. The rankings span across the 12 most popular online degrees: accounting, business, computer science, counseling, education, healthcare, human resources, human services, nursing, psychology, public health, and social work.
